StellarAlgo

Aligning purpose with impact: My journey to StellarAlgo

I joined StellarAlgo nearly six years ago, not because of a specific title or clear career path, but because I was ready to find joy in work again. After taking time off to be home with my kids, I knew I wanted to find to a place where I would have a real impact, feel supported, and work with people who shared the same drive to make a difference as I did.

Coming out of the Oil & Gas industry, I wanted more connection, more impact, and more space to grow. When I came across StellarAlgo, the role was entry-level, but the people and energy were different. After a marathon interview where I met nearly half of the team, I left feeling excited, valued, and hopeful.

And that’s what I found at StellarAlgo.

Having just wrapped ProBowl last month, how have you seen it evolve over the years, and in what ways has it continued to shape connection, purpose, and culture at StellarAlgo?

One of my earliest “this is special” moments came when we put together our first-ever ProBowl, our annual all-company event. It was 2022, and we were just emerging from the heart of the pandemic. We were hiring remotely for the first time, and suddenly we realized: we needed a way to bring everyone together, physically, emotionally, strategically.

We pulled it together in about six weeks with zero budget, leveraging connections, borrowed space from Platform Calgary, reward points to fly people in, and a whole lot of heart. It was chaotic, it was messy, and it was absolutely unforgettable. We had a customer speak to our full team for the first time, allowing our team to hear from and connect directly to the people we serve. For many of us, it was the first time truly connecting with a customer in that way. It was a turning point. That scrappy day helped set the tone for what culture could look like at StellarAlgo.

Fast forward to today, and ProBowl has evolved into one of the year’s most anticipated events. While the production has definitely stepped up, its core purpose remains unchanged: to connect, align, and learn together. All of our team gets the chance to slow down, sit side by side, and hear stories and insights they might not otherwise come across in their day-to-day work. Hearing from customers continues to be a highlight. When our non-customer-facing team members can directly connect their work to customer outcomes, it deepens their sense of purpose and understanding of the business. We can talk about impact all day, but hearing it directly from a customer? That sticks. The challenge now is that every year, the bar gets higher, but that’s a fun challenge to have! As we’ve grown, so have expectations, from our customers, from our team, from ourselves. What started as an idea scribbled on a whiteboard is now a major cultural moment. And it’s still just as important.

How our culture has evolved, and what’s never changed

The biggest shift in our culture has come with scale. We’re no longer a tiny team doing everything off the side of our desks. We’ve matured, and our roles have more clarity. Our talent has more depth and experience. The passion is still there but now it’s matched with accountability.

What’s stayed the same is our people-first mentality. We’ve always been a tight-knit team that truly cares, not just about each other’s work, but about each other as people. We prioritize connection, growth, and transparency. That transparency still surprises people when they join. From financials to hiring plans, our leadership team shares more than most companies I’ve worked at, and that builds incredible trust.

Culture can shift quickly in a growing company. What have been some of the intentional choices we’ve made to keep people at the center of that growth?

As Stellar has evolved, we’ve had to become more intentional. Growth coaching has been one of the ways we’ve done that, creating space for every team member to explore where they want to go in their careers and how we can support that alongside our business goals.

We also stay incredibly selective about who joins our team. It’s not just about talent, it’s about alignment. We look for people who are adaptable, curious, and energized by the pace of change. People who are okay with some ambiguity and who are excited to build as they go. That’s the kind of environment I wanted when I first joined, and it’s what we still aim to create today.

A Future of Growth and Opportunity

I’ve learned so much over the past six years, from planning team events and picking up coffee beans to building culture programs and shaping our employee experience strategy. Even now, I feel like there’s still so much more for me to learn.

The same is true for StellarAlgo. We’re not done growing, not even close. The future is wide open, and that’s what makes this such an exciting place to be. We’ll keep learning. We’ll keep evolving. We’ll keep showing up for each other.
